5 Reasons to Use Location-based Apps in Higher Education

By | Uncategorized

1. The real world is the best place to learn

History, architecture, art, social geography, anthropology – none of it is to be really experienced in your classroom. Using a mobile app, you can take students to the streets. Show them were historical highlights happened, what is special about statues in the city and how you can recognize the work of certain architectures near their school. This way, students will remember their experience – and the material – better and connect it to their personal environment.

2. Stories are the best way to learn

Dry information is hard to swallow. By shaping it into a story, students are more interested and more likely to learn. And why not let them create their own mobile stories? This way, students will not only teach each other, but learn by reproducing information in a completely new way too.

3. Learning on a device students use most: their mobile phone

Got students’ phones locked away during classes? Get them out! Let students learn on the devices they use – and understand – most. The defining features of smartphones like multimediality, connectivity and locativity will be the basis of a learning experience never to forget.

4. Interactive learning is learning more easily

We all know: interactive classed are far more interesting than normal ones. So why not expand this to the material itself? By giving assignments like finding items and taking photo’s students will actively look for information and answers. And by rewarding a good answer with a new part of a story, students may look just a little bit harder.

5. Competitive learning through multiplayer games Interactive learning is just the beginning.

Why not create a multiplayer game for your students? Let them do a roleplaying game and have them compete against each other. They will not only compete for a winners’ position, but mostly for learning the fastest. And (get ready for a cliche) this way, we are all winners.
